What is it about beaches that says romance? Whether it’s the soft sand, the gentle sound of waves lapping on the beach or the association of warmth and sunshine – beaches are made for romance.

But one couple’s beach may not be for everyone. For some, romantic beaches might be all about privacy, finding that secluded cove just for the two of you, or coming across a hidden bay whilst out on a walk; for others romantic beaches might be more about miles of wide, empty sand with plenty of activities to keep you occupied – from volleyball and beach cricket to kite surfing and windsurfing. We’ve all got an image of ‘that perfect beach’ in our minds.

So when it comes to finding the most romantic beaches in the world, where do you start? We’ve put together some of our top favorite romantic beach getaways to help you decide.

THE BEST ROMANTIC BEACHES IN FIJI

Home to hundreds of islands – 333 in fact – there are plenty of beaches to choose from in Fiji for romantic beach getaways. It also gets consistently voted as being one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world, so you can rest assured romance will score highly on its beaches.

If you’re looking for impossibly romantic beaches, then you can’t go wrong with Fiji’s Yasawa Islands. A collection of 20 islands, only 30 minutes by seaplane or helicopter from Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, the Yasawas boast white-sand beaches, private island retreats and plenty of opportunities for romance.

The one-resort luxury retreat of Turtle Island in Fiji has 12 pristine private beaches. In fact, it’s the only private island resort that can offer this to its guests in Fiji. Most of the beaches are available for private use where couples can reserve an entire beach just for themselves for the entire day.

While you eat breakfast every morning – we’re thinking omelettes with freshly-caught lobster, pancakes with caramelized banana or pastries and fresh tropical fruit – your dedicated personal concierge known as a ‘Bure Mama’ will talk you through the day’s activities, that might include snorkeling, sunrise and sunset horse riding, fishing expeditions, boat cruises and beach picnics.

All you have to do is decide which of the 12 romantic beaches is best for you and your partner, and what to take with you. You can choose what to have in your lunch hamper at breakfast for your own deserted island, shipwreck experience.

Each of the 12 beaches at Turtle Island offers a different feel and plenty of swimming opportunities, but each one is picture-perfect and comes with a beach hut and hammock – and best of all – it’s yours for the entire day.

The beaches available at Turtle Island for private use are: Long beach, the appropriately-named Honeymoon beach, Devil’s beach, Shell beach, Racheli’s beach (named after the daughter of the late founder of Turtle Island, Richard Evanson), Paddy’s beach, Nudy beach and Channel beach.

At Turtle Island, the most popular romantic experiences are undoubtedly the private beach picnics, sunrise or sunset horseback riding, and the sunrise breakfasts.

ROMANTIC BEACH GETAWAYS IN SANTORINI

Greece might not be the first destination that springs to mind when you start thinking about romantic beach getaways, given than many here are pebble beaches. But take a look at the bigger picture of impossibly clear, aquamarine water, sheltered coves and the spectacular blue and white skyline and you can see why Greece and her multitude of islands are top spots for some romance.

In Crete, there’s Elafonissi Beach, which is renowned for its pink-tinged sandy shoreline and crystal-clear turquoise waters. For a happening beach scene, then Mykonos attracts thousands of party goers every year. The most famous beaches of Mykonos are Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach, known for their DJs on the beach and late-night entertainment.

On the beautiful islan of Corfu, sandy beaches are surrounded by the aquamarine Ionian Sea. In the village of Paleokastritsa, on the island’s north western coast, there are six beaches, sheltered in bays with crystal-clear waters.

On the island of Santorini, you’ll fall in love with the white-washed, blue-shuttered cubiform houses in Oia and Fira that cling to the cliffs overlooking the vast, ancient caldera. Santorini has the looks, but it’s at the beach that you’ll be spending most of your time. Whether you’re looking to party, relax, sunbathe or enjoy a seaside meal, Santorini has a romantic beach just for you.

All of the beaches on Santorini are a mix of coarse sand and pebbles that range in color from burnt brown to deep charcoal – the colors and shapes of the pebbles on the beach were due to a volcanic eruption in the 16th century.

The south and east coasts of Santorini boast the sandiest beaches along with sheltered waters for good swimming. Red Beach, also known as Kokkini Beach, stars in countless Instagram posts thanks to its eponymous red cliffs that loom over the brownish sand. It’s easy to while away entire days here as it’s sheltered from the winds and there are a couple of beachside tavernas.

An ideal escape from Red Beach, White (Aspri) Beach is a sheltered cove just a few hundred meters west along the south coast. You can reach it via a small boat from Red or Akrotini Beaches. The name doesn’t describe the sand, but the gleaming white cliffs backing the cove – the sand is still volcanic and dark.

ROMANTIC BEACH GETAWAYS IN KAUAI, HAWAII

There’s a reason Kauai looks like something out of a movie set. This Hawaiian island has served as the backdrop for dozens of movies – from Gilligan’s Island to Jurassic Park, which makes it the ideal setting for your own romantic love story.

If adventure’s your thing, then you’ll fall in love with Kauai’s towering sea cliffs, canyons and hiking trails. The Kalalau Trail – known as the hike on Kalalau – is one of the most beautiful runs 11 miles along the island’s north shore from Ke’e Beach to the Kalalau Valley. The trek runs through verdant valleys, waterfalls and sea caves with stunning vistas.

However, if you’re less of a hiker and more of a sun worshipper, then head to Kauai’s romantic beaches or the 83-foot Wailua Falls waterfall, which feature prominently on the opening credits of television series Fantasy Island.

ROMANTIC BEACHES IN MOVIES

If your idea of romantic beaches is linked to Hollywood, then take a closer look at private luxury resort Turtle Island in Fiji’s Yasawa chain of islands, where the setting is the star of the movie.

Turtle Island is the location for one of the most recognized tropical island films, The Blue Lagoon that was released in 1980 starring Brooke Shields, Christopher Akins and Leo McKern.

In the late 1970s, Columbia Pictures looked at more than 1,000 sites before choosing the pristine beauty of Turtle Island thanks to its tropical paradise feel. When the filming had finished, the owner of Turtle Island realized how much he enjoyed having people on the island who appreciated its beauty as much as he did, so he decided to open the property to guests.

The movie drew the world’s attention to Turtle Island, one of Fiji’s first luxury resorts with visitors flocking to the island to experience the real-life ‘Robinson Crusoe’ idyll showcased in the film.

Today, Turtle Island continues to epitomize the dictionary definition of paradise, with crystal-clear turquoise waters, swaying palm trees and golden sand on its 12 romantic beaches.

ROMANTIC BEACH VILLAS

What would be on your wish list when it comes to romantic beach villas? Overwater bungalows that offer views of the marine life below, great views of sweeping sands and swathes of beach, rainfall showers, infinity pools and private butlers would undoubtedly be up there as definite must-haves.
