Key Takeaways

CARE FIJI COMMITMENT

Fiji reopened its borders to international travelers for the first time in two years in December 2021 with around 85% of all adults fully vaccinated. Tourism accounts for 40% of Fiji’s economy and the border closure saw an estimated 10% of the population unemployed.

Now – over a year since Fiji re-opened its borders – almost every hotel, resort and tour operator in Fiji is following Care Fiji Commitment protocols, a World Health Organisation-approved stamp of approval for best-practice health and safety measures for travel in a post-Covid world.

Tourism Fiji made health and safety the top priority to help visitors travel safely and worry-free. From the moment travelers board their flight, land at Nadi Airport and check into their resort, they can relax knowing that each step of their journey has been managed with safety in mind.

With the Care Fiji Commitment programme, the Fiji tourism industry has adopted WHO-approved COVID-19 best practices. So when you book with Care Fiji Commitment resorts, hotels or transfers, you can relax knowing that you’re in safe hands.

The Care Fiji Commitment plan was especially tailored to small businesses, which were the ones more vulnerable and appreciated the support in terms of being prepared. Tourism Fiji rolled out an impressive training programme across the tourism industry, leading to accreditation as a criteria for the reopening of business.

In recognition of the Fiji care commitment, the World Travel and Tourism Council declared Fiji as a ‘Safe Travels’ destination. The Fiji care commitment also provides visitors with the reassurance that the only people you interact with on your travels will be vaccinated.

Every tourism business in Fiji will also have a dedicated Wellness Ambassador who is responsible for rolling out these enhanced health and safety measures and keeping everybody safe.

Renowned for its remote islands, exclusivity and outdoor experiences that all help with social distancing, Fiji has to be one of the safest countries to travel to in a post-COVID world.

The Fiji Care Commitmentguidelines

All businesses in Fiji must commit to adopting the Fijian Government COVID-19 Safe Guidelines, which include the following guiding principles:

  • Maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres
  • Appropriate use of face coverings
  • Ensure personal hygiene at all times
  • Screening and management of persons with symptoms
  • Enhance surface sanitization
  • Maintain contact tracing information

CARE FIJI COMMITMENT – RESORTS

Turtle Island Fiji, a 500-acre, privately-owned luxury island in the Yasawa Group, re-opened to guests in December 2021 after almost two years of closure to international travel.

Purchased in the ‘70s by the late Richard Evanson, an American entrepreneur and eco-visionary, Turtle Island resort rose to fame as the location for The Blue Lagoon movie and has now become regarded as the place to visit for a truly authentic Fijian experience.

As the Fiji borders remained closed to travelers, the passionate Turtle Island team – under the guidance of Managing Director, Richard Evanson Jnr. – turned their focus to developing new food and beverage initiatives and guest activities to welcome back travelers while also providing critical support to local communities.

The last year has also seen the Turtle Island team conduct ongoing maintenance on the 14 light-filled bures (Fijian villas) which are dotted along the island’s front beach to ensure peaceful privacy and sunset views.

With the latest refurbishment in 2019, the low-rise environmentally designed accommodation – which offers a king-size bed, spacious bathrooms, expansive lounge area and generous verandas – are ready for guests who will enjoy the fresh and breezy outlook.

FIJI CARE COMMITMENT– TURTLE ISLAND RESORT

Turtle Island is proud to be one of the many Care Fiji Commitment resorts, committed to providing traveler safety and a programme developed to include enhanced standards of safety health protocols and measures to enable it to welcome back guests.

As a business, Turtle Island pledges to do the following:

  • To train staff to understand the risks associated with COVID-19 and how to implement the new procedures outlined in its COVID-19 Action Plan

The Covid-19 Action Plan outlines how Turtle Island Fiji implements its new safety processes and procedures aligning with the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Transport and Tourism guidelines as a minimum standard.

For staff, guests and visitors, Turtle Island Fiji will ensure that:

  • Their health and wellbeing remain its top priority
  • Staff are provided with the appropriate training to understand the new standards being put in place
  • Staff are provided with the equipment and information that they need to carry out their duties safely

Set-Jetting: Why Film Tourism and Movie Locations are Today’s Hottest Travel Trend

Set-jetting, or film tourism, is the act of traveling to real-world locations featured on screen to immerse yourself in the settings of your favorite stories firsthand. This new wave in travel blurs the lines between fiction and reality, allowing fans to step directly into the scenes that once played out on their screens–whether it’s sipping cosmopolitans in Manhattan à la Sex and the City, or soaking up the dramatic landscapes of Yellowstone.

But long before the modern streaming era, one private island in the Yasawa archipelago was already setting the stage for this global phenomenon.
