Exotic Weddings

Sunset skies from Turtle Island are a rhapsody of harmonic blues, indigos, roses and violets. The ocean moves from brilliant blue and green to reflect the pink and purple sky. Small wonder that Turtle Island couples insist on exchanging their wedding vows at the magic time of dusk.

Couples can choose from traditional Western services officiated by Methodist clergy or authentic Fijian wedding celebrations. Fijian celebrations are acknowledged as legal ceremonies in the United States, and are rich in color, symbolism and cultural heritage.

Condé Nast Traveller in October 2005 wrote, "The sunset skies don't look real: thick, horizontal smudges of violet, burnt orange and plum, fading into deeper and darker blue." Against this dramatic backdrop, the bride appears, presented on a raft. Her arrival is announced by the blowing of gigantic, booming conch shells. She is escorted to her waiting groom by two Fijian attendants. A Fijian choir serenades her approach. Following the ceremony the two take part in the ancient Kava ceremony, and then return to the raft, where they are led to their special marriage feast.

At the feast, called a "lovo," the couple and their guests dine on suckling pig, freshly caught seafood, and the fruits and vegetables from Turtle Island's own organic vegetable garden. A cake celebration follows, as do customary toasts and blessings, followed by delightful lantern-lit dancing under the stars.
